God’s Blueprint for Beating Burnout
Building a flywheel of success for life and career
The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. You will only wear yourself out. — Exodus 18:18
Burnout is rising sharply among corporate employees today. Many feel overwhelmed, disconnected, and unmotivated. The “always-on” culture — where laptops and phones keep us tethered to work at all times — has blurred the boundaries between professional and personal life, leading to emotional and physical exhaustion.
Interestingly, the Bible addresses this reality in the story of Moses. As he led the Israelites from Egypt, Moses took on the burden of resolving every dispute among the people. From morning to evening, he judged their cases alone. Observing this, Jethro, his father-in-law, warned him: “The work is too heavy for you; you will wear yourself out.” He then gave Moses a three-part prescription:
- Select capable leaders.
- Teach them the necessary standards and processes and delegate regular cases to them.
- Personally handle only the most difficult matters.
This advice remains highly relevant today. True delegation is not just offloading work — it involves teaching, transferring context, setting expectations, and empowering capable hands to share the burden. Many modern leaders fail to delegate properly because they skip the teaching step, resulting in constant back-and-forth confusion. By training others well and defining success clearly, we free ourselves to focus on high-value work while motivating our teams by staying engaged with the frontline realities.
True leadership isn't doing everything yourself; it's building others up to do great things with you.
# Action Items:
- Identify and list the areas in your work or personal life that are overwhelming you right now.
- Identify capable people around you who could be trained to handle some of these responsibilities.
- Create a short “how-to” manual for each task: document what completion looks like, important context, and any standards you expect.
