Identity + Calling = Impact
Building a flywheel of success for life and career
Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God — Romans 1:1
We all carry multiple labels: where we were born, what we studied, the languages we speak, or the titles we hold. Identity shapes how we see ourselves and how we expect others to see us. Often, we arrange these labels in a personal hierarchy, hoping to land on top.
Paul had many credentials he could have led with. He belonged to the tribe of Benjamin, the line of Israel’s first king. He was a Pharisee, trained by Gamaliel, one of the most respected teachers of the time. He held Roman citizenship. He was fluent in Greek and Hebrew. Any of these could have been his introduction.
But when Paul writes to the Romans, he begins with this: a servant of Christ Jesus. He chose to be defined by servanthood, not the stacked-up privileges he had earned.
He was also clear about his calling: called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God. That clarity gave him momentum. He traveled constantly, planted churches, wrote letters, mentored leaders like Timothy and Titus. He couldn’t sit still because the good news was burning inside him.
Even demons once said, “Jesus we know, and Paul we know.” Clarity of identity and calling makes you unmistakable in the spirit realm.
In today’s world, titles abound: director, founder, chief architect. But underneath those, who are you really? And what have you been set apart to do?
Until your identity and calling are clear, your leadership will lack weight.
Reflection:
- List the labels you most associate with yourself. Which of these reflect your identity in Christ?
- Reflect in prayer: Lord, who am I in You? And what have You set me apart to do?
- Practice reintroducing yourself, not with a title, but with purpose. Let your calling guide your leadership language.
