Move with the light you have

Stop waiting for perfect information. Learn why leadership requires moving with the 'lamp' you have, trusting God for the next step in times of uncertainty.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” — Psalm 119:105

When we pray for guidance, we often expect God to flood our lives with a bright spotlight — to reveal the entire path ahead. But God promises a lamp, not a floodlight. His Word gives enough light for the next few steps, not the entire journey.

In my own life, this has been true again and again. In 2008, I had the opportunity to move from Bangalore to Delhi for a short six-month government contract. It was a leap of faith: no job security, no knowledge of Hindi, and no guarantees beyond those six months. But my wife and I prayed, sensed God’s leading, and took the step. That six months became six years of national service, culminating in the honor of receiving the Web Ratna Award from the then IT Minister of India.

Years later, a similar situation arose — an opportunity to move to Panchkula and launch a startup. Once again, we prayed, felt God’s nudge, and moved. Though the startup ultimately failed, staying obedient positioned me for opportunities that I could not have foreseen. Today, I serve as a Chief Technology Officer — something I never could have mapped out from the beginning.

In leadership and in life, you will rarely have perfect information. Especially in a world shaped by uncertainty — from pandemics to AI revolutions — waiting for certainty means staying stuck. God invites us to trust His lamp, take the next few steps, and move forward. As you do, He reveals more, step by step.

Driving in the dark, you only see a few meters ahead. But if you keep going, that’s all you need to reach your destination.

# Action Items:

  1. Pray for illumination, not a master plan. Ask God to reveal just the next faithful step you need to take.
  2. Act courageously on the small openings you sense. Trust that God will light the next part of the path as you move forward.
  3. Journal past moments of God’s faithfulness. Reflect on times when taking a small step led you to a bigger blessing you could not have foreseen.
