The Burden That Builds Your Future

Building a flywheel of success for life and career

All of us suffer either a neurosis or a character disorder, which are disorders of responsibility. The neurotic assumes too much responsibility; the person with character disorder not enough. When neurotics are in conflict with the world they automatically assume that they are at fault. When those with character disorders are in conflict with the world they automatically assume the world is at fault.

Identifying our areas of responsibility is hard. Solving problems within those areas is even harder. It takes agency, humility, and consistent effort, while others seem to glide through life effortlessly.

To willingly confront a problem early, before circumstances force us to, means choosing something more painful over something pleasant or less painful. That’s maturity.

When you carry your burden early, you build a foundation your future self can stand on. Years later, when you seem to have health, respect, and strong relationships, people may call it luck. But luck often hides years of unglamorous responsibility.

You create your own “luck” by solving problems sooner rather than later. Every small act of responsibility today compounds into freedom tomorrow.
