Shape Life by Discovery and Deliberate Action

You don’t find life's purpose by planning it

get out there and try stuff until you learn where your talents, interests, and priorities begin to pay off. When you find out what really works for you, then it's time to flip from an emergent strategy to a deliberate one.

I didn't fully understand my talents and interests until my late 30s. I had a vague sense of them, but this clarity only came through extensive experimentation in my career. I've been a programmer, consultant, business analyst, project manager, e-governance consultant, employee, independent consultant, and more.

Once I discovered what truly resonated with me, I pursued it deliberately. I doubled down on it. As Prof. Clay says, “When people are motivated, they reap financial rewards in life.”

Because I work on what interests me, I give my best to everything I touch, and that shows in the outcome.

I encourage all young people not to limit themselves to one domain or city. Move around. Experiment. Find what clicks. Then dive into it fully.

While most motivational books apply life lessons to business, Prof. Clay does the opposite. He uses business case studies to teach how to live a better life. I prefer this book over the Tuesdays with Morrie types.
