Store Up for Your Winter Like the Ants Do

Building a flywheel of success for life and career

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest._ — Proverbs 6:6–8

King Solomon, in his sweeping wisdom, tells us to stop and observe one of creation’s smallest creatures: the ant. Without a leader, it prepares for winter during summer. It doesn’t wait for warning bells or official commands. It acts with foresight. It saves when there is plenty, knowing that seasons will change.

Joseph also lived out this principle. Guided by God's revelation, he stored grain during Egypt’s years of abundance. And when famine came, it wasn’t just Egypt that survived. It became a source of provision for other nations. Planning ahead was not a lack of faith. It was an act of trust and obedience.

Jesus, in His parable, described the wise builder who dug deep and laid a foundation on rock. The storm still came, but the house stood firm. There’s a promise embedded here: storms are inevitable. But wisdom prepares.

I began my own emergency fund in a simple savings account. No investments, just easy access. In the early years, I set aside small amounts, barely noticeable. But over time, it grew to cover six months of expenses. I've only dipped into it once or twice in more than a decade. Yet its presence gives me peace, enough to navigate job changes, pursue ventures, and face uncertainty with calm.

Wisdom is not just knowing the storm will come, it is preparing while the sun still shines.
